Owego Redux

Oh, Early Owego Antique Center, how I love thee.  This is my second post about this location  (see the first one here).

I love that wow moment when you drive over the bridge overlooking the Susquehanna River that takes you into Owego, New York.  It is a sort of time portal because you feel like you are in seventy-five years ago.  The antique shop is in the old J. J. Newberry building – the signage is still on the Tiffany blue facade.

There are two floors of everything you probably need if you are starting or adding to collections.  I have an affinity for hand painted metal or wooden trays, old coins, blue glass and chickens (aka cocks).

Thank you, Joyce, for a fabulous day in your neck of the woods – Binghamton, Vestal, Endwell, Endicott, Owego!!!!!  So fun! <3

Soflea Chic

The Eclectic Chic is located at 2044 Glenwood Plaza, Oneida, NY 13421. It is a multi-vendor antique and gift shoppe.  It has expanded since the last time I was there to double its previous size with even more vendors including my sister Sophie’s Soflea business.

You can find Soflea in this new section at the bottom of the ramp.  She sells a curated collection of milk glass and fine china, mirrors, furniture, brass trinkets, books, candles and other bespoke items.

There are so many vendors in this amazing space, each with their own unique collection of goods.  There really is something for everyone.  It’s so much fun to wander around and admire the vignettes.  Oh, and they have shopping carts too.  You pay at the register up front.  In addition, there is a restaurant and a sweet shop.  Did I say so fun? YESSSS!

The Eclectic Chic is open from 10;00 AM – 5:00 PM Sunday – Wednesday and 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM Thursday – Saturday.

Dalton’s

Shopping for Stickley furniture at Dalton’s is a lesson in the history of the early 20th century’s Arts & Crafts movement.  Proprietors David Rudd and Debbie Goldwein have been in the business of selling antique/pre-loved Stickley furniture for over forty years at this establishment.  Their customers include celebrities and other prominent A&C lovers nationwide (and someday, me, and maybe you!).  Their business is both in person and on-line. The furniture sold at this shop is original Gustav Stickley pieces and early works by Leopold and John George Stickley, items that pre-date the Audi family’s tenure at Stickley.

Rudd is a former decades long President of the local Arts & Crafts Society and current President of the Gustav Stickley House Foundation.  It was such a pleasure to chat with him as he shared the provenance of the exquisite pieces displayed in vignettes alongside pottery from the same period, accessories – candlesticks, ashtrays, and books, lamps, clocks, really everything you need to fill the living room of a Craftsman home.

Gustav Stickley owned a factory on what is currently Burnet Avenue in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse, a hop, skip and jump from this fabulous antique shop located at 1931 James Street, Syracuse, New York 13206.

It is a beautiful thing to see the care that has been taken in keeping the Mission-style spirit alive.  I felt like looking for a portal in the store in order to time-travel my way back to one hundred years ago, especially when I stared at  that photograph of Gustav on the wall, lol, it reminded me of the movie “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve.  I am in love with this period of furnishings and I am probably the only one in my family to have this passion.  I didn’t grow up with it.  Mom liked a French Provincial living room and Colonial-style bedroom furnishings.

Some of the pieces at Dalton’s are a better bargain than buying new and others costs tens of thousands.  In addition, they have an affinity for Native American textiles and pottery, and the collection is quite impressive.  It’s all for sale even though everything is museum quality.  You can sit on the settles and chairs as you imagine living with them in your own home.

I took so many pictures of this chair (above) – I can’t stop thinking about it!  LOVE!

Currently, there is a selection of wood-block printed designs by Rochester-based artist Laura Wilder.  They are displayed beautifully in oak frames.

If you wish to luxuriate in this experience, Dalton’s is open Monday-Friday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Soflea Garage Sale

1 Sparrow Lane, Fayetteville, New York 13066 is the place to be for an enchanting burst of nostalgia. The sale was today from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm but will resume on Sunday, July 30, 2023 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Sophie Tashkovski is hosting an incredible garage sale. She is liquidating her shoppe at Antiques at Railway Commons.

There are so many treasures – furniture including two sofa sectionals, glassware, ashtrays, mirrors, baskets, trays, vases, and clothing and accessories. I bought a fabulous vintage leather belt and several record albums. I am so excited to revisit my 1970s records – okay, I got them for free because they were technically mine. Sophie is my sister.

I used to play Linda Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams and sing into a hairbrush microphone. When I was fourteen, I had a stereo in my bedroom that I bought for myself with my paper route money. And of course, how can I possibly forget seeing Grease with Mom and Kathy in 1978? Sophie was a baby then so she didn’t come with us. The theater was next door to the Pizza Hut on Erie Blvd. Neither is still there.

I guarantee that you will slide into your own reminisces as you wander through this sale on Sunday.

Sophie has great taste and a keen eye for finding treasures for resale. And her prices are very reasonable. Be prepared to find lots of things. I was going to say bring lots of cash but she accepts Venmo, so…enjoy! <3

Soflea Sophie

My sister owns two businesses: Syracuse Yoga (6181 Thompson Road, Suite 803, Syracuse, New York 13206) and Soflea, a small store operating in the basement of Wildflowers (217 S. Salina Street, Syracuse, New York 13203).

Sophia Tashkovski is part of the McCarthy Mercantile. Her collection of flea-market finds and antiques includes her signature horseshoes, brass trays, statuettes and wicker baskets, as well as furniture and rugs.

Items are one-of-a-kind gems and so, there are always new finds to covet, which always makes the shopping experience a fun adventure.

Hours of operation: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday. It’s open today!!! (you’re welcome <3) Enter Wildflowers then head to the basement where the collective of shoppes is housed.

Blue Skies

heart shaped cloud

Summer’s been fabulous so far – and still another month to go of blue skies, great sunshine, relaxation and good times with good friends.  A blissful adventure where I am an active participant in life, leaving not much time to make new art.  The Futura series will have to wait, lol.

I’m currently waiting for someone to come over and interview me for an article for this magazine called Women of Upstate NY.  That’s exciting!

My art exhibits are still up at Natur-Tyme through the end of September, and at Sullivan library through August.  I will be doing a presentation at Natur-Tyme during their community day event on Saturday, August 15th.  I have art for sale on redbubble.com and on my shopify site as well.  So a lot is still happening.  And there is always another opportunity lurking around the corner somewhere.

It is really such a blessing to have the body of artwork at my disposal because making art is sort of a passive thing – you must step away from your regular life and find a corner of the universe that is quiet for hours and hours, and sort of fall into yourself.  Spend time contemplating thoughts and feelings then work them out in an abstract configuration.

And…I am really preferring to be present right now.  To not think about past events or get caught up with what may or may not happen tomorrow.  It is a happy way to be, to enjoy the people around you and feel blessed for your life and everyone, and everything in it.

Which is the reason why I have no blog to present about the Macedonian Festival at St. George Church last weekend.  I folk danced my head off and it was so much fun to see my family and people who I don’t see often enough anymore.  Children of my childhood friends are all grown up and the next generation is in full swing.

I didn’t take a single picture of the event, as I had during Greek Fest.  Sorry to disappoint.

But it made me start thinking about family and family history and how that all ties in with my art.  I told you about my dad’s history already.  My mother’s grandfather came here in 1911, joined the US Army, became a citizen then brought his family over on a ship that docked at Ellis Island.

Later he owned at least two restaurants – or one restaurant in two different locations – The Owl.

Do you see that black fan on the shelf?

Here it is again residing on my front porch.  It’s a time traveler that links my life to theirs.  I’ve brought it to school many times to add it to the still life display.  And many students have put it in painting and drawing compositions throughout the years.

I am loving my staycation.  The picture of family at the top of this post includes my cousins Jackie and Michele and their parents (and me and mine).  Their grandfather was my grandmother’s brother so we share this part of my family history and it has been such a great gift to spend time with them.  While so many of my Facebook friends traveled all over the world this summer, Michele came here.  She lives in Thessaloniki, Greece.  Jackie and I are already planning ahead.  We aren’t just going to talk about going there next summer.  We will be going there!

So maybe the Futura series will never come to fruition, but that’s okay.  The real future, one based on love for my family past and present is what I look forward to, and the ticket is a happy face, insuring me and as many people around me, a treasure trove of days filled with blue skies and sunny bliss.  Of course, the up side to that for those who read that I’m giving up on art is that I will finally be seeing the world with fresh eyes and I’m pretty sure art will follow!  So, no worries!
