The Pivot

I finished a new series of heart paintings yesterday – they are 5″ x 7″ mounted on 9″ x 12″.  I used metallic embroidery floss on all of them.  In addition I’ve used mulberry papers and origami papers, dominoes, playing cards, Scrabble pieces and vintage stamps.  I love them.  I never get tired of making heart paintings.

But, with that said – I did pivot into a new idea.  I am fascinated with the Ancient Civilization handbag.  You find them in Ancient Egypt, Gobekli Tepe, within Mayan sculptures and other places around the globe.  I researched shapes then created my stencils – twenty-four different bags.

I decided on 6″ x 6″ boards that will be mounted on 8″ x 10″.  I layered the boards with beeswax and traced the stencils onto them.  Today I added the mulberry papers and some origami papers, and tissue papers.  I didn’t finish that step because I started rethinking color.  At first, I thought I should use a different color for the handles and then – no.  I changed my mind.  I might have to remove some of what I did because I think I want to limit the color palette, since these handbags are always depicted as made of stone with cuniform marks or hieroglyphics on them.  I will let it go for now and trust that I will have clarity in the morning. The art reception for Women. Art. Voices at Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts is tomorrow evening from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  That exhibit is only up for about three weeks.

Camaraderie, one of the paintings in my “Futura” series from 2017 and newly framed, will be on display in the upcoming exhibition at Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, 410 Canal Place, Little Falls, New York 13365.

The exhibition is titled Women. Art. Voices.

It is scheduled for March 6, 2026 – March 27, 2026 with an opening reception on March 6, 2026 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

Little Falls Showcase

While the rest of the nation watches televised weather reports indicating a snow-mageddon approaching the east coast, Penny and I just returned from a trip to Little Falls, New York (from Syracuse) via the New York State thruway, which was dry as a bone, and coupled with the sunshine, it was a glorious, albeit cold, day for a road trip!

I think the actual storm is coming later in the day tomorrow.

We both had artwork in the Christmas exhibition at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts (410 Canal Place, Little Falls, New York 13365) and went there to pick up our work, as the show had ended.

While in the vicinity of the gallery, we had lunch then decided to check out Showcase Antiques (375 Canal Place, Little Falls, New York 13365).

Over thirty vendors are represented in this wonderful shop!  There are several aisles of items in glass cases, as well as individual booths that are curated as mini shoppes – vintage clothing, army paraphernalia, antique furniture, record collections, etc.

It is one of those places you must revisit regularly, as new “old” merchandise is always added.

I will be back for one of these crisp 1963 $2.00 bills (above).  Apparently, everything in the shop is pre-1975, which means that fifty-year-old things are antiques.  It is really weird to think that stuff I played with as a child is now an antique, lol.

And Pyrex bowls (above) are highly collectable these days.  We had the mint green ones back in the day.

Winter Solstice Art Sale

If you are in the vicinity of Little Falls, New York, there is a little festival happening this weekend (Dec 12, 13, 14, 2025).  In addition to the activities listed, the shops are open during their regular hours through Christmas.

I have two paintings for sale at Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, 410 Canal Place, Little Falls, NY.  They created a show of work priced at $100 and below to encourage art enthusiasts to purchase art as gifts for the holidays and to buy local.

You will be getting a deal because these are normally $125!  They are from my first horse series created in 2012 – encaustic & collage, 12″ x 12″ mounted on 18″ x 18″ chalkboard painted masonite.

Intertwined

I was lucky enough to spend the day with my dear friend and fellow artist, Penny Santy.  It was a lovely day for a drive to Little Falls, New York where Penny’s art show, Intertwined, is currently on exhibition at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts (MVCA), 410 Canal Place, Little Falls, New York 13365.

Penny gave a talk today explaining her process and the emotion that defines her work.  It is to do with motion – in winds, in ocean currents and in the way people must physically move, working together to attain goals, helping each other rise up the emotional ladder too, all while intertwining with nature.

Ghostly figures emerge from the abstracted canvases, which are inspired by her personal life, one of beach water sports, travel and enjoying time with family and friends.  In addition, she infuses a tribute to Native American mores and interprets favorite poetry stanzas then titles these oil paintings accordingly.

There are seventeen paintings in the show.  Several are still available for sale.  You can view this exhibition through November 14, 2025.  See the MVCA website for the deets including hours of operation.

The Women

Yulia Levkovich facilitated a class at the local community college – the focus? Portraits. Specifically women painting portraits of other women, Utica residents who have inspired them in some way – teachers, doctors, lawyers, mothers….

The result is this exhibition, currently on view through April 6, 2024 at Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, 401-403 Canal Place, Little Falls, New York.

There are two galleries at this location. The other is filled with consigned objects – paintings, ceramics, sculptures, accessories and other trinkets all by regional artists.
