Marisol

The Marisol exhibit at the Albright-Knox Gallery, 1285 Elmood Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14222, is a giant WOWZA.

Marisol Escobar bequeathed the entirety of her estate to the museum.  She passed away in 2016.  She was an American artist by way of Venezuala.

The exhibition is a combo of substantial figurative wood sculptures and crayon drawings and watercolors that have a playful quality.  The figures are family members, self-portraits, heads-of-state prominent types and plays on other artists’ works such as a derby toting umbrella man from that famous Magritte painting.

It was a dream come true.  I love Marisol.

Tashkovski Gallery @ AFL Studio

I opened a gallery pop-up shop at AFL Studio, 301 East Seneca Street, Manlius, New York 13104. Current shop hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. And possibly by appointment (TBA) – this is all very new. You can contact me via artist@karentash.com.

I am exhibiting four different series of paintings –

  • a dozen encaustic heart paintings with stands
  • eight paintings from my new Arcadia series (encaustic targets with stands)
  • thirteen 18″ x 24″ paintings from the Talisman series (oil & collage)
  • four 36″ x 36″ Target paintings (oil & collage)
  • twenty-seven bracelets mostly from the Rock & Roll series (with vintage pins)
  • one peacock feather choker (more to follow – I have several of them)

I will accept payment through PayPal (cash works too). I do not have a Venmo account yet.

It feels amazing to see this work grouped together. I already had one conversation with a patron that felt overwhelmingly positive. I’m so grateful.

Thank you, Amanda, for this wonderful opportunity!

Caz Part 3

It’s always fun to drop in to visit the Cazenovia Artisans gallery. I was there on Monday.

Linda Bigness has a new exhibit at Cazenovia Artisans. They are floral encaustics infused with gold and silver leaf.

Cazenovia Artisans is an artist co-op.

Join them Friday, July 12,2024 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM for an artists reception for Bob Ripley (watercolors) and Dave Eichorn (woodworking). Their show is called Human Nature.

Stampede

I managed to avoid being trampled by the masses during the jam-packed with visitors art opening last Friday at Edgewood Gallery. These pictures represent the tightness of it all.

We were all there to see “Drawing on Nature”, the latest exhibit featuring Donalee Peden Wesley, Faith Flesher, Candace Rhea and Carmel Nicoletti.

This animal showcase continues through June 21, 2024.

Edgewood Gallery is located at 216 Tecumseh Rd. • Syracuse, NY 13224 • Call (315) 445-8111 for more information

Commercial Art Gallery

It’s not glamorous by any stretch of the imagination, I mean, it is currently under construction and a bit messy, but it is a free space to exhibit artwork, especially if you are an emerging artist or you are thinking about testing the idea of venturing into the realm of professional artistry.

This is the upstairs loft space at Commercial Art Supply, also known as The Art Store, located at 935 Erie Blvd. East, Syracuse, New York, 13210.

Mugs & More Reasons to Love Gandee

The Gandee Gallery is jam-packed with ceramics created by over thirty local, regional and national artists including the spectacular David McDonald. It is an incredible collection of work for sale, curated by owner Jen Gandee.

Nature & Nurture

Anne Clarke, The Heart of the Matter, needlepoint, oil pastel, colored pencil, graphite, 28″ x 23″, $1,500
Anne Clarke, Interior Landscape, 2023, 87″ x 81″, fulled knit wool, cotton, silk, metallic, $6,000

Into the Woods is Anne Clarke’s latest art exhibit. It is currently on display at the Gandee Gallery, 7845 Main Street, Fabius, New York 13063.

This collection reflects her artistic journey – from student to professor and beyond (she will retire next month from her job at Syracuse University). The line quality in her drawings is exquisite. It was her first art love before she ventured into textile territory. Fiber Arts is Clarke’s current jam, incorporating crochet, tatting, felting and needlepoint into delicate creations in wool, silk and cotton. She is also a milliner, having made thousands of hats over the decades.

Anne Clarke, Deer in the Garden, 2014, 44″ x 34″, pieced textiles, $3,000

The energy that travels through her decorative and functional work infuses it with an incandescent spirituality and seems to unite us all in its path. She breathes love into each piece and it’s this positive feeling that allows the viewer to really inhale her depth of character.

This show acts as a retrospective, allowing Clarke to reminisce and re-evaluate her trailblazing path in order to prepare for its next turn.

Into the Woods will be on display through June 23, 2024. Click here for more information.

Anne Clarke, Net Series: 90 Lunches, 2010, 20″ x 20″, fruit stickers, cotton thread, $400
Anne Clarke, Daily Drawings: Peaked Hill Trust Arts and Science Residency, 2019, 10″ x 10″, $100
Anne Clarke, Hats, mixed fibers, all handmade textiles, $90

Implications

Get to Edgewood Gallery ASAP and witness these colorful, infused-with-energy-and-love paintings by Penny Santy and the late Barbara Vural. Many have been sold but a few are still available for sale. You must hurry because the exhibition is coming down this Friday (April 12, 2024.)

Penny’s newly created abstracted figures are enjoying time on a beach – windsurfing, playing tug-of-war, waterskiing and boating, while Barbara’s abstracted shapes are purely non-representational – and among the last she’d created. She was working in her studio two days before her recent passing.

In addition to these beautiful images, Esperanza Tielbaard is selling “natural elements” jewelry. And there’s glass-works (marbles as sculpture and pendants) by Doug Williams, as well as ceramic items by David McDonald.

Edgewood Gallery is located at 216 Tecumseh Road, Syracuse, NY 13224. They are a frame shop too – proprietor Cheryl Chappell is the best in the biz. Call (315) 445-8111 for further information.

The Women

Yulia Levkovich facilitated a class at the local community college – the focus? Portraits. Specifically women painting portraits of other women, Utica residents who have inspired them in some way – teachers, doctors, lawyers, mothers….

The result is this exhibition, currently on view through April 6, 2024 at Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, 401-403 Canal Place, Little Falls, New York.

There are two galleries at this location. The other is filled with consigned objects – paintings, ceramics, sculptures, accessories and other trinkets all by regional artists.

Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts is open Thursdays-Saturdays. Call (315) 823-0808 or email director@mohawkvalleyarts.org for more information including any inquiries regarding upcoming art shows.

Susan Machamer Jewelry

There are a few ways to sell your artwork at Cazenovia Artisans. The information is on their website:

  1. You can apply to become a member and be juried in. This also requires a monthly fee and you must be available to work as a sales associate in the gallery on occasion.
  2. You can sell via consignment. Again, the other members must vote you in. The gallery takes a portion of your sales as your fee.
  3. There is also a visiting artist program where the artist shows during one month and gets a prominent wall in the gallery. Click here to read more about these opportunities.

Every time I shop here, I notice they’ve found new and unique ways to merchandise the shop. Two dimensional and three-dimensional art, clothing, soaps, jewelry and furniture are arranged to offer customers that magical discovery experience.

Jewelry designer Susan Machamer was in charge of the shop on Monday. It was such a pleasure to meet this dynamic artist/jewelry designer/metalsmith/business woman/college professor.

Machamer attended Syracuse University and later became a professor there, teaching metalsmith techniques. She owned Syracuse Jewelry where she worked with customers on bespoke design collaborations, as well as repairing damaged rings, necklaces and the like. At Cazenovia Jewelry she did more of the same (and still does on occasion) before venturing out as a creative free-spirit designing and selling limited editions of original semi-precious pieces of silver, gold and cultured pearls.

In addition to her work here at Cazenovia Artisans, you’ll be able to purchase her pieces at Edgewood Gallery in Syracuse. Machamer is planning an exhibition of jewelry alongside two other artists during November 2023 there.

She shared how she takes stones and transforms them into wearable pieces by first drawing out the ideas in a sketchbook. This new series will have a floral vibe. I loved how excited she was about this new work. It is such a delight to see that sparkle of creativity electrifying someone.
