Fashion Magic

Rachel Zoe top, 7 For All Mankind jeans, BCBGeneration sandals

Here is my new favorite outfit!  I love this Rachel Zoe top so much – I bought it in white too!  And adding spandex to jeans is the most brilliant concept the fashion world has ever known.  These 7 For All Mankind cropped ankle jeans are so spectacular.  They totally move with me like a second skin.  My most recent purchase.  Lately, every time I buy something, I say to myself – okay, after this you don’t really need anything else.  LOL!  Needless to say, that thought is fleeting.

I also recently acquired these BCBGMaxAzria silk velvet cargo pants in teal – one of the major colors this season.  They are amazing in every way!  Soft, elastic waist, cropped so that they did not need hemming… OMG!  Love!!! <3

And the Sloan fit pant from Banana Republic – I bought them in both garnet and charcoal.  The red ones were on some ridiculous sale because they were the last pair and happened to be in my size.  I think they ended up being only $20!

Here are the rest of my #ootd pics since school resumed.  Some are weekend shots.  I really love all my Rachel Zoe tops.  The fabrication is top notch.  I buy them on-line as no stores in Syracuse, New York carry her.  Same goes for Trina Turk.  Actually, shopping on-line is the way I prefer acquiring my wardrobe.  Sometimes I try on BCBG and other stuff while at Lord & Taylor.  I spent a couple hours in there trying on jeans last week so that I could ascertain my size and the best fit.  Turns out I am a standard size 2 across the board in Hudson, Joe’s Jeans and 7 For All Mankind (0 in Banana and XS or XXS in BCBG depending on the cut).  Yes!!!!!  And…I love it when something comes in the mail and it is a perfect fit.  It is just like magic!  Because, of course, fashion is magical.

I feel so much satisfaction in the completion of these heart paintings.  I made them during Memorial Day weekend but only put finishing touches on them, including titles, a little while ago.  They are sprawled on the dining room table currently, waiting for me to find a place to store them/sell them.

Hearts are my thing.  They are everywhere in my life – heart paintings in all media abound on the walls of my house; I even find heart stones, (literally, everyday) when I walk the trails of Green Lakes.  I love love.  I find beauty everywhere, particularly in the heart motif, and coupled with the vibrant hues of oil paint infused beeswax and its subsequent texture in my artwork, it fills me with gratitude, a sort of passionate energy and joyous warmth.  I desire to share that feeling with everyone in the world.

One person’s positive energy is stronger than a roomful of debbie downers, lol.  It would be lovely to think that my good vibes saturate these paintings and in that way I can spread seeds of love into this universe.  Corny, I know, but genius.  There is power in the unity of spirit.  Believing in goodness is the stuff of legend. <3

They are very experimental.  I did not set out to do a baseball theme – in fact, I bought the hardboards with the intent to do more horseshoes paintings.  So, these just happened.  They kind of came out of nowhere.

I love the texture of encaustic.  The smooth areas juxtaposed with thick globby drips, the creamy wax and the gorgeous smell…  It is an intoxicating medium.  I added paper money to these, both real and imaginary.  I also had this wonderful feather-infused rice paper that I loved incorporating. So cool!

I’m finally getting back to blogging now that I’m in summer mode.  I will post soon about more new encaustic paintings, once I get around to mounting them onto the chalk boards.  I have a dozen new heart paintings and a dozen abstracted baseball ones that I am loving.  They are currently residing on my kitchen table – and on the surrounding counter space.  No current plans for exhibiting them as of yet.

I still have artwork up at Kimberly’s Salon on James Street in Eastwood and at Syracuse Yoga down the street on Thompson Road.  Not sure what is up next for me, but that makes the journey so special.  I made the paintings for a purpose; just not sure what that purpose is as of yet, lol.

If I can get my friends to put up with doing the photography, I will try to post #ootd pics on Instagram during July and August.  Although I am usually the one who takes our obligatory selfie when we are all out and about, I am not a fan of those selfie pics where the fashion blogger cuts off her own head or shoots a foreshortened image from above.  By not a fan, I mean I really don’t want to do that.  So…we’ll see.

Here are some outfits from the past few weeks.  Kinda fell off the wagon with posting them here.  We were having technical difficulties with the lighting in the classroom.  I had to double edit the pics to adjust the brightness, so there are inconsistencies – I guess I will hold to that excuse.  We take dozens of pics in a short time and I swear I am always changing out the pose, but for some reason I like this crossed legged thing-a-ma-bob that I have been doing a lot.  It feels like the most natural and most comfortable position for me especially when I am wearing a dress or skirt.  My go-to vogue.  My work colleague Brad calls it my stance.

I’ve discovered something called the Amazon wish list.  It is a public list of things I desire.  All I have to do is dream while on-line shopping and perhaps these things will actually materialize in my mailbox on the condition that fairy godmothers/Santa Claus/tooth fairy/Easter bunny/patron saints of fashion do exist.  That is wishful thinking at its finest.  How cool is this?

Last night Chittenango Central School held their annual School Fair at the high school.  Each year, my colleague Katy and I spend several hours installing the middle school art show on the walls of the hallway between the two gymnasiums.

Then at 8:00 pm we take the whole thing down and pop the art into our cars to return it all to the middle school on Monday.  We displayed around three hundred pieces of 5th – 8th grade artwork.

Here are my outfits of the day from the last two weeks.  The landscape of my background keeps changing as I shift student work around the room.  All of my clay projects are complete.  The last batch went into the kiln today.  The 5th graders are currently working on a three-dimensional wood sculpture, my Studio in Art students are learning watercolor techniques and the rest of the 8th graders are immersed in the various SLO test projects:  Statue of Liberty paintings, “under the sea” landscapes with fish (mixed-media lesson), Japanese fan project (also mixed-media) and abstract paintings with realistic horses thrown in.  So four additional different lessons for the six classes.

There is a lot going on, which will culminate in the School Fair set for May 12, 2017.  I will have my hands full preparing for that exhibition and hopefully even with the upcoming state math tests looming, we will get everything accomplished.

But first – Spring Break!!!  I will be working on the business of making art as soon as tomorrow.  Can’t wait.  Watching students make art is clearly a fun job, but nothing beats the guilty pleasure of creating my own artwork – even though it is super messy and therefore cannot be done in designer clothes.  So…I will be sacrificing fashion for my art.  I did buy a new dress for Easter though.  It is Halston Heritage. <3 OMG, I love it!

The art reception for Honor Thy Master at Dolce Vita World Bistro was last night.  This was the perfect opportunity to break in my blue BCBG Max Azria dress.  I bought it a year ago to wear to a wedding in Florida.  I decided to wear something else that day instead – you must know me by now to know that I had three possibilities at the ready (I went with the Jill JIll Stuart black jersey gown).  In addition to the never worn dress, my new BR cardigan was freshly delivered from www.bananarepublic.com, and so, coupled with sandals and gold hoop earrings, I was ready to be ready to have a great time at my party.

20170411_181318

20170411_180559

It was magnificent!  I am soooooo grateful to have support from wonderful friends and family.  We filled the restaurant.  It was an incredible thing – surreal might be a better word – to see people from work, fellow artists, students, my parents and my besties all dining together, all coming together to view my art and to enjoy a three-course meal, which included some amazing cheesecakes for dessert – OMG!

20170411_182957

20170411_183419

I didn’t actually eat – I table-hopped, chatted and laughed, and took all of these fun pics!  It was definitely one of the best art parties I have ever had, really and truly.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you for coming and sharing your Tuesday evening with me. <3

20170411_184643

20170411_184113

This was a successful experiment.  Magical, more like.  Bringing people together and offering them a special menu created for the event.  Making an art show more of a happening in a way that benefits the venue and its patrons, as well as the artist.  There was actually interest in my work – potential sales.  Yes!  My dream of finding homes for these paintings is coming true.

20170411_184135

20170411_183016

So it was and is a win-win.  I loved sharing my art message with those who asked.  It is a funny thing to verbalize one’s visual language.  Mine is a personal vision and it requires a certain amount of vulnerability for me to do so.  As I reflect on this series of paintings, its meaning has shifted.  It happened gradually at first, with the changes I made two weeks ago and now I discover something new every time I look at them, as if they are still in flux, changing and growing emotionally as I am.  It’s almost as if I can feel myself moving even while sitting here writing this.  I can feel the momentum of the planet and it is like when you watch those films that fast forward the life-cycle of a tulip in bloom.  Evolving exponentially.

20170411_190358

20170411_183851

I heard that an artist’s energy resides in their work and people of like energy are the ones who are attracted to it.  Therefore, an artist in despair will find their patron in someone of a similar disposition.  My paintings speak of the need to seek solace in love, and are in the spirit of taking that leap of faith in order to find it.

20170411_183024

That used to feel sad to me, but it doesn’t anymore.  There is no fear of despair in that journey.  Only a sense that the best is yet to come.

Last night was very special.  I will treasure that feeling of friendship and camaraderie for a very long time.

The World

It means the world to me to share my artwork with all of you.  To find the perfect venue, Dolce Vita World Bistro, for the Honor Thy Master series.  To take a group of paintings that had been stored under my bed, re-work them to give them new life, and get them out into this world.  And to just see them again, breathing new life on the walls of this wonderful restaurant – it just feels magnificent.  This is an artist’s bliss.

20170402_165759

20170402_165726

Today I installed my art exhibition at Dolce Vita World Bistro.  It took two-and-a-half hours to figure out the placement and hang them all.  I brought the paintings into the space and began by just leaning them against the wall where I thought I wanted them to go – the way I do when assisting the artists who show at the school library gallery.  I rearranged a little bit but it pretty much looked like my vision very quickly.  Then it was only a matter of climbing on a barstool, measuring with my favorite yardstick borrowed from school, and figuring out how to operate the clasps on the plastic cords that make up the display system on the walls.  That, and finding the right bit for my power screwdriver, lol (I brought flat head rather than phillips head screws – how weird).

I love the way the artwork looks in the space.  The colors work well with the terracotta walls, and I love the contrast of abstract work in this old-world classic style bistro.  It just works.

There may be a wine special – proprietor Antonietta Vigliotti is working on that, as well as selecting some great music via the sound system.  I requested ’70s rock, preferably 1977 stuff, which is my definitive moment musically.  I think you pick the music of your life when you are fourteen, am I right?

20170402_165853

The paintings are only $200.  The larger one – 24″ x 48″ is only $500 (regularly $800) and the three 11″ x 14″ paintings are only $75.  They are priced low to sell.  I want them to find good homes.  That would mean everything.

Honor Thy Master will be on display through the month of April 2017, so if you cannot make the reception I trust that you will find the time in your world to visit the restaurant some time during the month! <3

Here are my most recent outfits of the day.  We take a bunch of photos every day in order to get one decent one out of the bunch.  Google photos has been animating the lot to produce these hilarious gifs.  You can see how far away Katy is when she takes the pic.  We do that to insure I can get my body to fit into the square dimension of Instagram.  Should I begin to add these silly things to my Instagram account every so often – just because they are sooo stupid funny or are they just stupid?  I have lost perspective.

Here are the pictures from my art exhibition at Chittenango Middle School, Chittenango, New York.  I’ve combined the Messages from the Other Voice series with the Pompano Revisited series to saturate the yellow walls of the school library with my personal narrative.

They will be up through April 2017.

The work looks better in person – the lighting is not great in the pics, but that is because the artwork is so high up on the walls.  I do love the way the library looks soooo fresh and different with each show we install and everyone’s artwork ends up looking great.  The captive audience thing always works for me, but it is funniest when I ask students if they have been to the library – if they have seen my art and they say something like I didn’t notice.

That actually doesn’t matter to me – no, not one bit – because I know that they have noticed it, if only in a smidgen of a subliminal fashion.  It doesn’t take but a glance to place a positive aesthetic into someone’s visual cortex, lol.  And then you can sit back and witness the processed results.  It’s kind of amazing.  And I really LOVE that.  Art benefits people in so many ways in which they are not even remotely aware. It is everywhere.  All around us.  That’s me being subversive – in a good way.
